O'Neil was a student at high-school when she auditioned in 2005 for the third Canadian Idol season. She advanced to the 100th round due to the fact that judges were awed by her vocal performances. O'Neil's performance was highly praised by the jury. Despite this, O'Neil suffered a significant drop during the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she got votes for bottom 3, and bottom 2. The judges were shocked by this and proclaimed to the public they believed that Melissa was the best contestant. With consistently excellent performance from then onwards, O'Neil never again finished in the bottom three. The performance she gave on September 7 in 2005 was such a dazzling performance that judge Werner predicted the news headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil was contacted by Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on the success of Canadian Idol immediately.
